Málaga to Granada: the essentials
- Distance: 127 km · 1h 35min by private car (about 1h50 by bus, 1h25 by Avant Renfe train to Granada station)
- Ideal duration: a 10-hour day gives you the Alhambra plus the city centre without rushing
- The critical detail: Nasrid Palaces tickets are timed, named and ID-checked — they sell out weeks ahead
- Our options: private tour from €599 per group or scheduled group excursion — see both below
Private or Regular Service?
The first thing to consider is whether you prefer a private tour or a regular group excursion.
Private tour — from €599 per group
A fully private experience with transport, an official guide, itinerary planning and the flexibility to adapt the day to your group. The price is per group, not per person. Ideal for families, groups with different mobility needs, or travellers looking for a more personalised experience. See the itinerary.Scheduled group excursion — from €190 per person
A more affordable option with shared transport, a set itinerary and fixed departure times. A good choice for couples and solo travellers who prefer a lower price and don’t mind following a scheduled programme. Departures are available on selected dates — please contact us to check availability.
Bonus: Can you get from Málaga to Granada by train or bus?
Yes — and it’s a perfectly valid option worth considering before booking anything. The Avant train operated by Renfe runs from Málaga María Zambrano to Granada Train Station in around 1 hour 25 minutes. However, there are only a few departures each day, so it’s worth checking the latest timetable in advance. Alternatively, ALSA buses run more frequently and usually take between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours.
One thing to bear in mind is that Renfe is a public company, whereas ALSA is privately operated. While this may not seem important, as locals we’ve often found that customer service can be more responsive with ALSA, particularly if your plans change or you need assistance. Also, although the train is the faster option, travelling with luggage can sometimes be less convenient than taking the bus.
When the train makes sense: you’re travelling as a couple, you already have your Alhambra tickets, and you don’t mind arranging the connection from Granada Train Station to the Alhambra (around 20 minutes by bus or taxi).
When it doesn’t: you’re travelling as a group of four or more, as a private transfer is often more convenient and can even be better value.
Either way, the biggest challenge isn’t getting to Granada—it’s securing Alhambra tickets with access to the Nasrid Palaces.
Alhambra tickets: what nobody tells you before booking
Many tour operators use the Alhambra tickets as a selling point, but no company can guarantee them last-minute. Tickets are personalised (requiring your full name and passport ID), meaning they cannot be resold in bulk. To secure your entry, book months in advance. If you’re late, don’t worry—we’ll do our best to find a suitable alternative for you.
This is the part that ruins day trips, so read it before booking anything:
- There are two ticket types: general admission with Nasrid Palaces (€22.27) and without the palaces (€12.73). Without the palaces, a 127 km trip is hard to justify.
- Your Nasrid entry is a fixed 30-minute slot, checked to the minute. Late entry isn’t allowed.
- Tickets are named and linked to your passport or ID — they’re checked at the door and can’t be transferred.
- They regularly sell out 4-8 weeks ahead in high season.
- “Skip-the-line” tickets don’t exist for this monument. Any site selling them is reselling standard tickets at a markup.

What Else to Visit?
In addition to the Alhambra, there are several other fascinating sites to explore in Granada:
- The Palace of Charles V is a unique Renaissance building within the Alhambra, reflecting the shift from Islamic to Christian rule in Spain. Commissioned by Emperor Charles V in the 16th century, its grand circular courtyard and imposing façade contrast with the surrounding Moorish architecture. Today, it houses the Alhambra Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, offering visitors insight into Granada’s rich artistic and historical heritage.
- Albaicín Neighbourhood: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Albaicín offers breathtaking views of the Alhambra and charming narrow streets filled with history.
- Royal Chapel of Granada: The resting place of Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, located next to Granada Cathedral.
- Granada Cathedral: One of Spain’s most impressive Renaissance-style cathedrals.
- La Madraza: Originally founded in 1349 by Sultan Yusuf I, this historic Islamic school provides insight into Granada’s rich cultural past.
- Local tip: Visit spots like the Mirador de Carvajales or Carmen de la Victoria, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Alhambra over a cup of coffee.

FAQ Granada Day Trip from Málaga
How long does a Málaga to Granada day trip take? Plan for 10 hours door to door: about 1h35 each way plus 3-4 hours at the Alhambra and time in the city centre.
Is a day trip to Granada from Málaga worth it? Yes, always worth it. In addition, Granada has much more to offer than just the Alhambra. You can also visit the Albaicín, the Cathedral, and the Royal Chapel.
What’s the best time to leave Málaga? Early: 8:00-8:30 for a midday Nasrid slot. It’s the combination that works best all year.
Can I do Granada and Nerja in the same day? Yes, we can include a stop in Nerja either on the way to Granada or on the return journey. However, in our opinion, Nerja deserves a full day on its own. It’s also worth keeping in mind that the Nerja Caves close at 3:30 PM in winter and 5:30 PM in summer, so the timing can be quite tight if you’d like to visit the caves as well. It may be a lot to fit into one day, but if you would like to combine both Granada and Nerja, we can certainly make it work.
Do you offer hotel pick-up? Yes indeed. For private tours, we will pick you up directly from your accommodation.
Conclusion
A Málaga to Granada day trip is one of the best days you can have in southern Spain — as long as the Alhambra part is sorted. Tell us your dates and how many you are, and we’ll come back within 24 hours with the options that actually work for your group.
